Goals are not always easy to write down and spread throughout your organisation.

One mistake is to add a list of “safe” goals and try to complete them as soon as possible. Those type of goals aren’t long-term and lack priority or a holistic view. The point of setting ONE long-term goal is to align all other short-term objectives in the same direction. Here is a guide to help you:

Step 1: ask “wouldn’t it be great if…..”

Complete the sentence to what you would want the company to achieve. Keep filling out the sentence and get your ideas down. Choose three that stand out.

Step 2: Celebrate Success

Travel to the future where your company has achieved its goal. We don’t define the goal here, here we want to write down the effect of the goal, that is what you are celebrating. Write down as many as you can in a newspaper headline, poster, press release or a conversation between friends. Choose three that stand out.

Step 3: Prioritize

Look at the different lists and see if there is a combination that can clarify your goal? What would make you proud to accomplish? We want this goal to be achieved in 5-20 years, so make it big, challenging and maybe a little scary.
